Abstract
For civil engineering constructions, high performance structures correspond to the notion of multi-material combination of multi-function structures. We present the three main families of composite materials, that are of an interesting development (soft composite for tensile structures, rigid composite for different kinds of construction). Then, we try to introduce the design optimization considered at different observation levels: from the micron size of the fiber to the full scale bridge. For example, on a microscopic scale, we consider how the durability of glass fiber in a cement matrix. On a mesoscopic scale, we introduce the notion of three dimensional reinforcement. Finally, on a macroscopic scale, we introduce the notion of smart structures.
