Abstract
The present paper examines the economic prospects of a technology that is relevant in this context, namely the electric vehicle. Despite the excellent environmental performance, this technology carries a cost burden which impedes a massive entry into the marketplace. An environmental costing procedure, including environmental externalities (i.e. air pollution, noise) in the framework of a social cost calculation could shift the balance unambiguously in favor of the electric vehicle, in spite of the superior environmental performance offered by this technology in comparison with traditional vehicles fueled by gasoline or diesel. The time horizon for the simulation of introducing electric vehicles in the actual and projected car fleet cover 20 years (1990 - 2010). After calculations on e
