Abstract
The regulatory framework in which European public transport companies operate has evolved quite rapidly since the mid-eighties. However, in Italy, in spite of a number of measures aiming at restraining public intervention in the provision of the service (subsidies, financial incentives, cost refunds, and so on), only recently, the public transport sector has initiated a structural reorganisation. The stimulating element has been the issuing of the Law 422/97 which, aiming at increasing competition for the market, should represent a strong motivation for the companies, currently in the sector, to improve their efficiency in order be prepared when competitive bidding for the service will initiate.
