Abstract

In January 1998, due to an accident during a windstorm, a ship collided with As Pias Bridge at El Ferrol, Spain, As Pias Bridge being a major traffic bay crossing. As a result, some of the spans were either damaged or destroyed and a similar number of piers were severely damaged as well. Within seven weeks traffic was reestablished on the Bridge. Dragados did not only achieve this in that time but, since the deck was already obsolete, changed the whole deck. A new deck was built and erected, this being done in two phases, a first phase that allowed opening the Bridge with geometrical conditions similar to the old deck, and a second phase which widened the deck to its final dimension. 1.
