Abstract

Semi-analytical characterisation of piezoelectric plates and shells P. Masarati and G.L. Ghiringhelli Dipartimento di Ingegneria Aerospaziale, Politecnico di Milano, Italy Abstract The characterisation of arbitrarily anisotropic and non-homogeneous thick plates and shells is discussed. An original formulation is extended to the analysis of structural components embedding piezoelectric materials. The solution preserves an analytical form in the in-plane directions, without re- sorting to any undue plane wise discretisation. A thickness-wise, piece wise discretisation is performed ab initio, which allows an effective modelling of laminated panels with the desired degree of refinement. The characterisation is obtained by solving the linear elastic problem of a sample fibre of plate, sub- ject to indicial internal forces and moments per unit length. The deformation of the fibre is described as the linear combination of generalised deformations and curvatures and of a warping term. The piez
