Abstract
The present study concerns three-dimensional modelling of tides using two different numerical methods to represent the tidal current profile. One uses an expansion in the vertical (a spectral method), whereas the other uses a finite difference grid in the vertical (the grid box approach). A three-dimensional tidal model of the Faeroe-Shetland North Sea region has been developed to examine the spatial distribution of M] tidal elevations and currents in the area. Calculations have been performed using both simple flow- dependent eddy viscosity and one-equation turbulence models. The sensitivity of the tidal current structure to the parameterization of vertical eddy viscosity and the coefficient of bottom friction will be examined in some detail. A comprehensive data set of observed tidal elevatio
