Abstract
Application of a laterally-averaged two-dimensional numerical model on a branching estuarine system, as that of Southampton Water and its tributary estuaries (Test, Itchen and Hamble), showed similar variability of salinity and velocity fields in time and space, with that observed at representative areas of the estuary. The temporal and spatial variation of instantaneous salinity and velocity fields was examined under neap and spring boundary forcing, with the intention to assess the effects of increased tidal amplitude on the mixing patterns of the estuary. Furthermore, the introduction of increased river flow and a down-estuary wind
