Abstract
This paper presents an overview of the application of seismic isolation to a fixed-base offshore platform. The technology, already widely used to protect civil engineering structures like bridges, buildings and nuclear or industrial plants, has also found valid application in the field of offshore oilrigs. In fact, more than a year has transpired since the Chirag 1 offshore oil platform located in the Caspian Sea, the first such seismically isolated offshore structure, has been operational. The seismic protection of this type of structures represents a further step toward the enhancement of structural safety under particularly adverse conditions, which can accrue important results in terms of preventing environmental disasters with associated human and economic losses. 1 Introduction The study of a structure particularly prone to seismic atta
