Abstract
Pseudo-dilatational and rotational waves are developed for an elastic medium with a position dependent density and thus position dependent "dilatational and rotational wave speeds", although in a strict sense these no longer exist as purely dilatational and rotational waves which are in general coupled through the material heterogeneity. A numerical example for a soft soil deposit with a wavespeed profile that varies as the square root of the depth coordinate serves to illustrate the methodology. 1 Introduction Elastic waves in discretely layered media, i.e., layers with constant properties, and in variable property layers have bee
