Abstract
Past experience and recent research indicates that soil-structure interaction plays a very important role on the seismic response of bridge structures. This study investigates the effect of soil-structure interaction in seismic analysis of bridges. Proper methodology of modeling the abutment, its foundation and backfill stiffness is presented. Also, an iterative design procedure that takes into account the nonlineariry of a bridge structure caused by soil-abutment interaction is developed. This work enhances current code procedures and methodologies providing a rational basis to consider nonlinear SSI phenomena in bridge design. Specifically some of the conclusions include: (a) For monolithic abutments, if the bridge is analyzed with t
