Abstract
A three dimensional interface element is used to model the perimetrical and vertical joints in a concrete arch dam. This element is compatible with the complicated geometry of contact surfaces in concrete arch dams. During an earthquake, joint opening affects the seismic response of the dam by releasing the tensile stresses and redistributing the internal forces of the dam.
