Abstract
The dynamic characteristics of a steel cylindrical tank containing water is studied by experimental modal analysis (EMA) and by finite element analysis (FEA). In the FEA study, the fluid-structure interaction was taken into account by using a displacement-formulated element, which assumes no net fluid flow and no large fluid deformation, and by coupling the displacement normal to the wall of the structure. The FEA gives a greater number of normal modes, some of them of very close frequency and as the mass of water increases, the natural frequency for a particular mode always decreases; some modes are wiped out completely at some stage while some other new modes may emerge.
