Abstract

Several tests have been performed with a two-dimensional horizontal model, in order to assess the effect of settling velocity (w,) on the simulation of suspended sediment transport. It is shown that, in the Tagus estuary (Portugal), results are more sensitive to the variation of settling velocity (of the order of 1.0-3.0 mm s~*) than to the variation of the critical shear stress for deposition (of the order of 0.1-0.3 Pa). The formulation of settling velocity is also important, notably when spring and neap tide results are compared (variation of suspended sediment for constant w, is 2 times greater than for concentration-dependent w,). 1 Introduction Settling velocities of cohesive sediment aggregates, although substantially higher than those of fine individual particles,
