The epicenter of this earthquake was quite close (20km) to Kozani, the capital of the prefecture (figure 1). Of the many churches to sustain structural damage in the area one of the largest is located in the city of Kozani. The seismic performance of this church is the subject of this paper Also located in the city of Kozani during the main event was an accelerograph. which recorded the strong ground motion successfully. Widespread damage was caused by this earthquake to a variety of structures, including numerous churches, within an area of approximately 200 square km.
