Abstract
Sea transport of bulk hazardous cargoes threatens the marine environment through accidents. In recent years the trend of performance of tankers in terms of accident rate has been down. The principal contributor to the safety record has been the level of personnel training. In 1992-95, on the basis of the Tempus project Gdynia Maritime Academy implemented a new training scheme for tanker staff and modernized training facilities. Project activities and outputs are given. As a result of modernisation of the educational system, graduates and course participants employed in Polish and EC owned ships will be highly qualified in accordance with the present international standards.
