Abstract
An experimental investigation into the behaviour of piled embankments has been carried out using the pin model apparatus. The development of the experimental model and tests conducted to examine the effects of pile cap area on the model behaviour are discussed. A theoretical simulation of the piled embankment behaviour has also been undertaken using the Finite Difference method. 1 Introduction The use of piles to help support the fill leading up to road and railway crossings reduces the problems of settlement and stability in several ways. The presence of piles stiffens the soft subsoil and reduces the stresses on the upper subsoil by transferring load through the piles down to a lower firm stratum
