Abstract
In this work, a hierarchy of mathematical models for the numerical analysis of buried pipelines under earthquake-induced motions is examined. These models were developed within the context vulnerability-type studies for pipelines crossing seismically prone regions. In particular, we have : (i) A model based on a unidimensional representation of the pipeline in the soil along the lines of a beam on elastic foundation, (ii) Finite element model supplemented by special transmitting boundaries for analysing the pipeline for propagating seismic waves under plane strain conditons and (iii) Coupled boundary and finite element model for time stepping analyses of the buried pipeline under three dimensional conditions and by employing the control point concept. The results given by the above
