Abstract
In the last three years structural design sensitivity and optimization techniques were introduced at MTU in the design process of several aero engine rotor blades. These applications were performed with the commercial finite element systems S AMCEF and MECHANICA/RASNA. Sizing techniques as well as shape optimi- zation were used for the tuning of the vibration characteristics of the developed rotor blades. The paper will give an overview of two of these applications and of the experimental verifications: first the structural sizing of the aerodynamic blade profiles of a modern wide chord low pressure compressor blade and secondly the shape optimization of a hollow low pressure turbine rotor blade. 1 Introduction The design of aero engine rotor blades is an iterative process between the aerody-
