Abstract
In this paper, we extend an optimization model for design of rectangular reinforced concrete beams subject to a specified set of constraints. This extended model is closer to concrete design regulations and practical recipes used by experienced engineers. To solve it, we used an artificial intelligence search technique known as the genetic algorithm (GA), and our results were compared with a mathematical programming technique that deals with the non-linear equations of our model. Some of the issues involved when using GAs such as representation, parameter tuning and genetic operators are also discussed, and we present our own methodology to deal with them.
