Abstract
The Genetic Algorithms (GAs) is applied to optimise the reinforcement steel area required for reinforced concrete columns with uni-axial and bi-axial bending. Column design, bending capacity checks and final bar detailing are combined in one program that uses GAs. The strategies adapted within the GA are discussed and the results obtained are compared with the British Code recommendations. Deficiencies in the British Code simplified rules are highlighted with an example. 1 Introduction Classically, optimum design of structures has been the topic of many studies in the field of structural design. Rapid developments in computing power, especially in parallel processing and the emergence of new techniques in adaptive search, have provided the potential for significant changes in this area.
