The problems con- sidered herein are the flow over a spillway and seepage through an earth dam. An iterative procedure combining the BEM and a nonlinear programming algorithm is used to determine the free surface location and the flow discharge over a spillway. INTRODUCTION In a recent paper [1], the authors have investigated the numerical solution of free boundary problems by coupling the BEM with optimization techniques. The basic idea was to recast the problem of determining the free surface location as an optimal shape design
