The effect of an interphase can be approached experimental analyzing the behavior of single fiber composites or, theoretically, using either analitical or numerical methods. A review of the use of the embedded single fiber technique (ESFT) and of finite elements tecniques to analyze the effect of an interphase on the mechanical behaviour of composite materials is presented. Two specific applications are discussed in some detail, the analysis of crack propagation in the region around a coated fibre and the effe
