Abstract
Maintenance concepts used for U S Navy structures are outlined. Reliability centered maintenance concepts are reviewed. Basic definitions and components of systems that provide a structure with self awareness are presented. A tiered approach of fault identification that arbitrary divides damage experienced over the life of a structure into two board categories is presented. The two-tiers are defined as damage monitoring (accumulated damage over the life of the structure) and situation assessment (large scale damage due to a singe incident). 1 Introduction Much is currently being written and said about damage detection, health monitoring and damage tolerate structures.
