Abstract
In the year 1987, the first author introduced the so-called hybrid (stress) bound- ary element method - HSBEM, which may be seen as a generalization of Pian's hybrid finite element formulation developed on the basis of the Hellinger- Reissner potential. Later on, De Figueiredo proposed an alternative formulation, the hybrid displacement boundary element method - HDBEM, which is equally consistent and presents the same computational characteristics, although based on a different variational principle. Owing to their variational consistency, both methods end up with a symmetric stiffness matrix, a paramount feature if one is dealing with time-dependent problems, for instance. Moreover, since the funda- mental solution is itself the problem's trial function, post-pr
