Abstract
Fracture Aspects of Cylindrical Structures Petr Broz Department of Engineering Structures, Klokner Institute, Czech Technical University, Czech Republic Abstract For cylindrical structural elements, stress intensity factors involving both internal and external semi-elliptical surface cracks are investigated. We consider thick-walled construction of radius ratios between 1 and 2 which are subject to variant loading. The solutions presented here were derived applying the hybrid boundary element method for 3D stress analysis. Comparative calculations are also performed for pipes using the weight function method. Key words: semi-elliptical surface crack, circumference strains, indirect method, power type loading, thick-walled construction 1 Introduction There is a considerable inconvenience involved in loaded thick-walled cylinders: surface cracks can occur. These are mostly of semi-elliptic geometries. The fracture study of these structures is of sign
