Abstract
A linear wave model based on the hyperbolic type mild slope equations is adapted to incorporate the effects of a monolithic submerged breakwater. The presence of the structure is simply introduced into the existing model as a stepwise variation of the water depth. For the energy dissipation due to the flow separation a simple hydraulic loss formula is derived. The effectiveness of the breakwater in damping the incident wave energy is measured in terms of the resulting transmission coefficients. The calculated coefficients are compared with experimental data. 1. Introduction The role of an offshore breakwater is to protect a harbour or a coastal area from the wave action. The top of the conventional type of breakwaters extend well above the se
