Abstract
To increase the fatigue service life of a latch in a wool dump press, an optimal fillet profile was sought to minimise the maximum shear stress and mass.Two methods are used: photoelastic stress minimisation and evolutionary optimisation by FEA. In the photoelastic stress minimisation method material in the lowly stressed region of the domain design is removed step by step to make the free boundary become having the same isochromatic fringe order. In the evolutionary optimisation, elements of the design domain having shear stress smaller than the product of rejection ratio times the maximum shear stress of the latch are gradually removed.
