Abstract
A transient, two dimensional mathematical model was developed to analyse the ignition of cellulosic material. The significant feature of this model is the coupling of the solution for the solid and gas phase through the boundary conditions at the gas/solid interface along with a global finite rate ther- mal degradation for the solid phase. Results are presented for the transient evolution of temperature, velocity, volatile mass fraction, combustion heat release, and degradation heat reaction. This last parameter demonstrates that the pyrolysis reaction is the controlling mechanism leading up to igni- tion. Introduction The practical interest in ignition processes stems from concerns related to fire hazard and conseq
