Abstract
A viscous drop spreads on the earth-faced (bottom) side of a smooth horizontal plate, which is either uniformly heated or cooled. Experiments by Levinson et al. [1], using isothermal silicone oil drops hanging below a glass plate, are used by Ehrhard [2] to validate the extension of the model of Ehrhard & Davis [3] towards conditions of hanging drops. It is found that the actual model is able to describe the observed experimental time behaviour reasonably. In particular the influence of the Bond number is correctly reflected, as the model predicts a spreading towards an equilibrium state, the drop radius depending on Bond number. This behaviour is absolutely opposite to previous findings for spreading drops on the top surface of the plate. The model holds for thin drops under quite ge
