Abstract
We consider rapid isothermal solidification of diluted binary alloys with solute trapping effects. Planar growth of a solid germ from a melt is addressed. The initial concentration of solute in the melt is taken to be below its equilibrium value. This problem is reformulated within the mass balance integral method using the boundary layer-type profiles for solute concentration. Thus, the original problem is reduced to the initial value problem for an ordinary differential equation. Its solution is validated by the numerical solution of the original moving boundary problem. 1 Introduction During solidification processes th
