Abstract
The boundaries of the flow domain during the surge-flow irrigation process are time-dependent. To correctly simulate the fluid motion and the boundary displacement, an adaptive grid is introduced. Thus, the time-varying physical domain is mapped into an invariant computational domain, eliminating any bias in the estimation of the celerity at which the boundaries are displaced. The mapping results in a set of transformed Saint-Venant equations for the flow description. By analysing the equations which represent the characteristic directions of the transformed Saint-Venant equations, it is shown that in the presence of moving boundaries, the speed at which the information is transmited not only depends on the speed of the flow and the celerity, but also on the rate of deformation of the domain.
