Abstract
In this study the plastic deformation of thin walled tubes subjected to cyclic plastic axial loading with and without an applied hoop stress is examined by finite element modelling and the results compared with previous experimental values. Previous examinations into the use of kinematic hardening models [5] predicted a limit to the plastic strain accumulation resulting from the sustained loads. Experimentation shows the plastic strain accumulation is not limited. The development of the yield surface under cyclic loading is discussed The results indicate the yield surface is able to contract and expand along the stress axes and show that an important factor in the development of any cumulative plastic strains is the direction of the sustained stresses relative to the direction of the cyclic stresses.
