Abstract
Current methods of evaluating highway and airport pavement layers are principally based on accumulated experience of pavement design and engineering judgement. However the use of new or improved techniques to strengthen pavement layers in recent years have highlighted the need for in-situ non-destructive tests (NDT) to characterise these materials. This paper describes recent developments in the field of in-situ characterisation of pavement materials using a simple low-cost pavement monitoring system called Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP). The theoretical background for the DCP analysis computer program is described. The versatility of the DCP and analysis system is illustrated by conducting a case study in the form of a full-scale project measurements and analysis. It is believed that if used properly and if
