Abstract
In the present study, the action of the hot and compressed propellant gas flow in a gun barrel behind a projectile on heat transfer into the barrel wall has been theoretically and experimentally investigated. For theoretical description of the in-bore flow an interior ballistic model was applied using the boundary layer equations of Prandtl. Analytical solutions are given for the heat transfer along the inner tube wall between breech and projectile. In addition, an ablation model was developed taking into account surface erosion by melting processes. The theoretical results are compared with heat transfer and erosion measurements performed in the ISL 20-mm-test-gun by use of thermo- couples and erosion surface sensors to check the model applicabi
