Abstract

Fundamentals of the sensitivity analysis bring the reader to the definition and phys- ical meaning of sensitivity coefficients, applicable to the inverse boundary thermal problems. Three general procedures of calculating sensitivity coefficients are dis- cussed. It is pointed out that, although any numerical method, like finite difference, finite element or boundary element methods can be used, the BEM seems to present some advantages. Reader is provided with details of modifications to be introduced in standard BEM computer codes to make them capable of returning sensitivity coefficients. Numerical example involving thermal problem of continuous casting is included. 1 Introduct
