Abstract

In this paper the boundary element method is used to solve a slow vis- cous flow with a free surface. Particular attention is paid to the angle of contact of the free surface with a stationary surface. An interative scheme is presented and numerical solutions are obtained for various values of the non-dimensional surface tension parameter and it is found that there are situations where there are no solutions, one solution and multiple solutions. 1 Introduction Oil lubricated thrust pad bearings are widely used in a variety of ma- chines. The analysis and design of such bearings have attracted considerable attention and one of the aims of this paper is to analyse, using the Boundary Element Method (BEM), the fluid flow as it leaves the bearing. Khader [1], Ingham and Kelmanson [2], and Yuan and Ingham [3] have presented stud- ies of its use and have identified the abili
