Abstract
The analysis of singular and near-singular integrals by the continuation approach leads to a unified treatment of Cauchy and hypersingular integrals, and results in numerical procedures for integral evaluation which are simple and robust. Perhaps as important is the insight, provided by the approach, into the conditions which guarantee the existence of singular integrals. It is the "gauge conditions", which arise during the continuation analysis of singular integrals which provide powerful insight into some very important issues relevant to the BEM. In the present paper, it is shown how the gauge conditions provide the additiona
