Abstract
In this paper, a boundary element solution to an inverse elasticity problem is presented. In this inverse problem, boundary conditions are incompletely specified and strains are experimentally determined at a number of internal points and used as input to completely resolve these boundary conditions. In contrast to previous studies, the sensitivity matrix is embedded in the boundary element formulation. This avoids the need to solve a series of forward problems to construct the sensitivity matrix. Unfortunately, the inverse problem is still ill-posed. Physical constraints and the singular value decomposition are introduced to stabilize the solution. As a result, the algorithm presented here has reasonable tolerance to error in the measurement of strains. The solution of this inverse proble
