Abstract

Our experience of designing a visual information processing service for use by engineering-product designers leads us to report a conflict between user and computational views of physical and chemical properties represented in an object-oriented classification system. Physical-world representations frequently demonstrate a need for segmenting the property descriptions of classes. A generative technique for depicting property commonalities, reported here, allows us to separate sets of interconnected properties from the core object-oriented principle of inheritance across classes.
