Abstract

This paper describes the development of a component feature extraction system by using expert system technology, within the domain of manufacturing. Most feature extraction systems tend to use CAD-models [1,3,4] The features extracted are used for identification, location, verification and inspection tasks. The approach taken here is different in that the user who is an expert with the detailed knowledge of the component provides all the relevant information to the system which in turn creates a feature base. Once created, this feature base can be accessed by other parts of an integrated system for object identification and detailed quality assessment. The system was developed using an expert system shell called Crystal. It also provides a graphic displa
