Clawson Capella University, USA Abstract Traditionally, educational institutions issue degrees based on the participation of the student within their institution, however, a shift is taking place where qualifications are issued on the basis of attainment of specified competency units influenced by industry standards. Designed in terms of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes expected from graduates, competency-based curricula aim to equip learners for enhanced performance in the workplace. Capella University conducted a study utilizing a design-down competency driven instructional design approach linking program outcomes down to the course, the assessments, the resources, and finally to the alignment of each unit within the course.
