Abstract

The laser-light-sheet technique as a flow illumination method and two im- age processing procedures are applied to visualise particle motion in propa- gating waves. With the first image processing algorithm the tracking of the particle paths beneath the waves is performed by frame-by-frame advance. The second strategy allows to store a time series up to 63 video images in the hardware of a PC frame grabber board. In either case only standard video equipment is required. Both image processing techniques described in this paper are adequate flow visualization tools to identify particle mo- tion in progressing waves. 1 Introduction For many applications in coastal and offshore engineering it is necessary to know the kinetics underneath propagating gravity waves. It is possible to estimate orbital particle pat
