Abstract
Interactive walkthroughs in complex engineering data allow to check various spatial properties such as manufacturability, operability and maintenability. These data are so voluminous that various stratagems are necessary to achieve real time frame rates on current graphics workstations. A very common sratagem is to define for each object several levels of detail in order to choose the appropriate level at each frame. The choice of a specific level of detail can depend on various factors: performances must not be obtained at the cost of an important degredation of image quality, except perhaps when the viewer moves rapidly inside the scene. Some techniques for simplifying geometries are reviewed as well as some methods for selecting simplified obje
