Abstract
A prototype interactive visualization system for representing surface qualities and quantitative properties of materials in architectural design is presented. It allows real-time animation of material alternatives in three-dimensional architectural models at an early stage of the design process. Using referenced texture-maps, quantitative and qualitative information on material properties is linked to the image of the material and can be displayed selectively. This paper explains the rationale of the visualization system in terms of its formal structure, its database, and its application to an exemplary design project. It concludes with an agenda for further research. 1 Introduction The process of materialization, that is, the process by which the architect decides what material to use and how to use it to realize his ideas formulated as design, dete
