This paper outlines the development of a computer based system to teach engineering design within a concurrent environment This is part of the IDER (Innovative Design Engineering Research) project, which is a joint collaboration between Sheffield Hallam University and Hertfordshire University. The main objective of the project is to familiarise students with the concurrent design process by enabling them to design a product (from specification to final detail design) within a simulated concurrent engineering environment The environment is simulated using the CommonKADS methodology to represent the expertise necessary to obtain different perspectives on the design
