Abstract
The hierarchical structuring of a knowledge based system for flownet design is presented. The inference system is composed of certain groups of subordinate knowledge based systems, each of which deals with a partial issue of the flownet design for earth dams on alluvial foundation under steady state flow conditions. According to the subordinate systems, different outputs are produced based on different information on permeability distribution. The meta-knowledge system produces a final conclusion with regard to these outputs.
