A general problem solving approach in t her mo dynamic s M. Veillette, B. Marcos, F. Bourget, L. Therien & J. Lapointe Mechanical Engineering Department, Universite de Sherbrooke, Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, JlK 2R1 ABSTRACT This paper presents the approach we used to develop problem-solving tools in thermodynamics. The originality of our approach lies in the application domain and in the general nature of the kind of problems it solves. The approach can also be applied to other domains that have a mathematical formalism. A general analysis of the domain where we apply it is described in this paper. The basic components of the knowledge base employed to solve problems are identified. The use of the different components in a problem solving strategy is also shown. The description of a prototype and a discussion related to potential of our approach complete this paper.
