Abstract

Laser shock processing was optimized using a generated initial pressure as a dependent variable. Laser energy, surface condition of a target, and thickness of transparent overlay were used as independent variables. Experiments were conducted using an Ndrglass phosphate laser generating an infra-red radiation (1.054 |Lim in wavelength) with a pulse duration of -600 ps. Polarized polyvinylidene fluoride transducers, with a 2 mm x 2 mm active area in a negative current orientation, were used for the initial pressure measurements. A pressure history generated during laser shock processing was also experimentally determined. 1 Introduction It has been known since the early 1960's that high-intensity shock waves traversing a metallic target can cause significant cha
