Abstract
The significance of residual stresses for failure analysis of surface treated components B. Scholtes, W. Zinn University Gh Kassel, D-34109 Kassel Germany Summary Because of the great importance of residual stress states for the strength and lifetime of surface treated components they have also to be taken into account in the case of failure analyses. Investigating re- sidual stress states of damaged parts in many cases allows to assess the quality of surface treatment processes performed and to detect defects introduced. Sometimes also the loading history and the failure process itself can be determined and explained. By means of typical examples of differently surface treated parts important aspects are out- lined and discussed which have to be taken into account for reliable failure analyses taking residual stress states into account. Introduction In many practical cases manufacturing induced residual stress states are of great importance for the strength and lifetime
