Abstract
This paper reviews experimental results published in literature about the influence of material strength and surface finish on fatigue behaviour of steels. It is emphasised the increasing importance of achieving accurate and homogeneous surface finishes as the material strength is increased and therefore its toughness is lowered. Further, it is remarked that the selection of high strength materials in fatigue loading could be inadequate when the achievement of extremely smooth surface conditions are not reproducible. 1 Introduction Fracture by nucleation and growth of fatigue cracks is a topic of great concern for designers. It accounts for a significant fraction of the failure cases, often estimated
